Shell defence

Basketball drill · Under-12 and up

Four offensive players spread round the arc pass the ball, and four defenders have to be in the right place by the time it arrives: on the ball, one pass away in the denial, or two passes away in help. It is how every team-defence principle is taught, and it is the drill that shows a coach who is guessing.

Adding it to a session puts it on your run sheet with its time and cue. It does not use up one of your saved plays.

Time
15 minutes
Players
8: 4 on offence and 4 on defence
Equipment
  • 1 basket
  • 1 ball
  • Bibs for one team

Setup

  1. Four offensive players on the perimeter: two guards at the top of the arc and two on the wings.
  2. Four defenders, one guarding each, starting in their positions with the ball at a guard.
  3. Offence passes around the perimeter only, holding each catch for two seconds.
  4. Defenders move on every pass into on-ball, deny or help position before the ball arrives.
  5. After a few minutes of passing only, let the offence drive. Swap offence and defence every three minutes.

Coaching points

  • On the ball: arm length away, high hand, force them to the sideline.
  • One pass away: deny the next pass, hand and foot in the passing lane.
  • Two passes away: sink into the lane, so you can see your player and the ball at once.
  • Move while the ball is in the air, not after it has been caught, and call out "ball", "deny" or "help".

On the run sheet: Move while the ball is in the air: ball, deny one pass away, help two passes away; call it out

Progressions

  1. Allow skip passes, so help defenders have to close out from the far side.
  2. Let the offence drive after the catch; help has to stop the ball and recover.
  3. Play it live to a stop or a score, and count stops in a row.

How it runs

The ball starts with one of the guards. The defender guarding them is on the ball; the defenders guarding the other guard and the near wing are one pass away, so they deny the passing lanes; the defender on the far wing is two passes away, sagging into the lane in help. When the ball moves, every one of those jobs changes, and all four defenders have to move before the ball arrives. The animation shows the guard passing to the wing and the whole shell shifting with it: the wing's defender closes out on the ball, the guard's defender jumps to the ball into denial, and the two help defenders sink towards the lane.

Start slowly, passing only. The point is that every defender is in the right spot every time, and that is only visible when the coach can stop it and check.

Why it is the backbone of team defence

Individual defence is about the player with the ball. Team defence is about the other three, and those three are where nearly every breakdown starts: a defender watching their own player and losing the ball, or watching the ball and losing their player. Shell is the drill that makes those positions habits, and it is the vocabulary the rest of the defensive season is taught in.

The mistakes to watch for

Moving after the catch rather than during the pass, help defenders standing on their own player on the far side, and silence. A defence that does not talk is guessing.
