About this play

The Princeton offence of coach Pete Carril, and its most famous basket: the first round of the 1996 NCAA tournament, when 13th-seeded Princeton beat defending champions UCLA 43-41. The centre flashes to the high post and takes the pass; the wing, overplayed by a defender denying the pass, cuts behind him to the basket and Gabe Lewullis scores the winning layup from Steve Goodrich's pass. It works because the harder a defence denies the wing, the more open the backdoor becomes.
