About this play
Runner on third, fewer than two out. The runner breaks for home as the pitcher starts his delivery and the batter must get the bunt down whatever the pitch, because if he misses, the runner is a dead man halfway down the line, hence the name. When the bunt is on the ground the runner scores before anyone can field it, and the defence can only take the out at first. It works on surprise: called on the right pitch, with the infield back, there is no defence against it.
