About this play
Game 1 of the 1954 World Series at the Polo Grounds, tied 2-2 in the eighth, Cleveland's Larry Doby on second and Al Rosen on first. Vic Wertz drove the ball well over 400 feet to dead centre. Willie Mays ran straight back with his back to the plate, caught it over his shoulder, then spun and threw back to the infield in one movement, so Doby could only tag up and reach third and Rosen had to stay at first. The Giants got out of the inning, won in ten and swept the series. The Polo Grounds' centre field was far deeper than this diagram, so the catch is drawn at the top of the picture.
