About this play
The concept Hal Mumme and Mike Leach built the Air Raid around, at Iowa Wesleyan, Valdosta State, Kentucky and Texas Tech, after borrowing much of their passing game from LaVell Edwards' BYU. Two receivers run shallow crossing routes from opposite sides and pass so close they could slap hands, while the outside receivers run corners and the back releases to the flat. Against man-to-man coverage the two defenders chasing the crossers run into each other, or into the traffic, and the quarterback hits whichever crosser comes out clean. Against a zone, the crossers settle in the gaps.
