About this play

Four receivers go straight downfield at once: the two outside men run go routes along the numbers and the two slots run seams. A Cover 3 defence has three deep defenders for four deep routes, so the middle safety cannot cover both seams. The quarterback reads him: whichever seam he does not take is open behind the underneath linebackers. Vertical stretches like this were at the heart of Don Coryell's passing game in San Diego and remain a staple of the run and shoot and the Air Raid, which run it on almost any down.
