About this play

The quarterback hands off and the running back charges at the line as if on an ordinary run, then stops and pitches the ball back to the quarterback, who has been waiting behind him and now throws deep. Linebackers and safeties are taught to attack a run the moment they read it, so for a second the secondary is coming forwards while the receivers are going past them. It is a once-a-game call, best after a team has run the ball well enough that the defence has started to cheat up.
