About this play

The Netherlands' second goal in the Euro 1988 final in Munich, which they won 2-0 against the Soviet Union. Arnold Mühren sends a long, high cross from the left over the whole defence, and Marco van Basten, wide on the right of the penalty area at an angle that left almost no target, volleys it first time over Rinat Dasayev and in at the far post. It works only because the striker kept running to the far side, where no defender expected the ball to go.
