About this play

A passing pattern at the heart of positional play, used constantly by Pep Guardiola's Barcelona and the Spain side of 2008-12. The holding midfielder plays into the striker, who has dropped off with a defender tight on his back. The striker cannot turn, so he plays first time to a third player who set off as the first pass was played, into the space the defender left by following the striker. It works because the defender can mark the man receiving the ball, but not the one running off it.
