About this play

Runners on first and second, nobody out, and the batting side is expected to bunt them over. On the pitch the whole infield rotates like a wheel: the third baseman and first baseman charge the plate, the shortstop sprints across to cover third, the second baseman covers first and the pitcher takes the middle. Whoever fields the bunt throws to third for the force on the lead runner, which is the out a sacrifice bunt is meant to give away. It is a gamble, because it leaves second base empty, so it is used only when the bunt is all but certain.
