About this play
Game 3 of the 2001 American League Division Series in Oakland: the Yankees led 1-0 in the seventh and were one loss from elimination. Terrence Long doubled into the right-field corner and Jeremy Giambi tried to score from first. Shane Spencer's throw missed both cutoff men, but Derek Jeter, who was not part of the planned relay, had run across from shortstop to the first-base line, gathered it and flipped it backhand to Jorge Posada, who tagged Giambi before he reached the plate. Giambi did not slide. The Yankees won 1-0 and took the series.
