About this play

The counter-press Pep Guardiola's Barcelona used the moment they lost the ball: the nearest players had about six seconds to win it back before the team dropped into shape. Here a defender has just won possession on the edge of his own box. Messi closes him down from the front while Iniesta, Xavi and Busquets step into the three passing lanes behind him, so the only pass left is a forced one that Xavi intercepts. It works because the opponent is at his most disorganised in the seconds after winning the ball.
