About this play
Since the FIH allowed the self-pass in 2009, a free hit no longer has to be passed to somebody else. Defenders must be five metres away, and from a free hit inside the attacking 23 the ball has to travel five metres before it enters the circle. So the taker taps it to themselves and carries it those five metres at speed, while the defence is still retreating, then feeds a forward running to the post for a deflection.
