About this play
Two receivers on one side: the outside man runs a hitch at five yards and the inside man runs a corner route at about twelve. Against Cover 2 the cornerback is responsible for the short outside zone and the safety for the deep half, so one defender has to choose. If the corner sinks under the corner route, the hitch is open; if he jumps the hitch, the ball goes over his head into the hole in front of the safety. It is one of the most common two-man reads in the game because it puts a single defender in a bind.
