About this play
Diego Maradona's second goal in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final in Mexico City, which Argentina won 2-1. He takes the ball near halfway, turns away from Peter Beardsley and Peter Reid, runs at Terry Butcher and Terry Fenwick, goes round Peter Shilton and scores. Jorge Valdano's run through the middle matters: it keeps the defenders from all turning to Maradona at once. Drawn here from the halfway line onwards, with the run and the chasing defenders compressed into one half.
