About this play

A runner on second takes a big lead to get a jump towards third. The shortstop breaks for the bag behind him, and the pitcher, watching from the set position, wheels and throws the moment he sees daylight between the shortstop and the runner, which is where the name comes from. The runner has to turn and get back before the tag. Even when it does not get the out, it shortens every lead that follows, which is half the point: a runner who is a step closer to second is a step further from scoring on a single.
