About this play

The opening minute of the 1974 World Cup final in Munich. The Netherlands kick off and pass the ball among themselves without West Germany touching it, until Johan Cruyff picks it up near halfway, accelerates past Berti Vogts and is brought down in the area by Uli Hoeneß. Johan Neeskens scores the penalty, the first ever awarded in a World Cup final, though West Germany came back to win 2-1. It shows Total Football's idea of the deep-lying forward arriving from where no one is marking him.
