About this play

With a runner on first and fewer than two out, a ground ball to the shortstop (position 6) goes to the second baseman (4) covering the bag for the force, and on to the first baseman (3) to beat the batter. Two outs from one pitch. It works because the infield sets up for it before the pitch: the middle infielders play a step closer to second at double-play depth, and the second baseman takes the throw on the move and releases it without stopping, so the batter-runner is still a step short when the ball arrives.
