Ball out over their goal line

Attacking backline throw-in, a netball set piece drawn in Playmaker: 7 of our players and 4 opposition players on the pitch.
Goal shooter — 1 of 11

Netball · Set piece · 7 of your players and 4 opponents

The ball has gone out over the goal line you attack. Goal attack takes the throw beside the post, the goal shooter holds on the far side of the ring, and the centre comes high as the safe pass.

The set-up

In the Attacking backline throw-in, goal attack (2) stands on the goal line 4.6 m in from the left side line, beside the post, with the ball. Goal shooter (1) holds on the far side of the ring, inside the goal circle about 3 m from the goal line. Wing attack (3) waits on the edge of the circle on the right, outside it — she may not go in. The centre (4) comes high, about 9 m from the goal line, as the safe pass.

Their goal defence stands 0.9 m clear of the thrower, as the rules require, and in this drawing a little further. Their goal keeper is between our shooter and the ring, their wing defence is on our wing attack, and their centre covers the space in front of our centre. Wing defence (5), goal defence (6) and goal keeper (7) stay back down the court.

Why it works

A throw-in this close to the post is a chance to score straight away. The defenders are all crammed into the goal circle, so the danger ball is the one to the goal shooter on the far side of the ring, where her defender has to turn to see it. If that is covered, the wing attack on the circle edge feeds the shooter on the next pass, and if both are covered, the centre's high position means the ball can always come out and go back in.

Markers are drawn with a little extra space between them so that each pair reads on a phone; in a game they will be closer.

What to drill

  • Three options, in order. Shooter, circle edge, safe ball. Animate each one and make the order a habit.
  • Clear the space. Draw the wing attack and centre moving away first, so the shooter has room to step to the ball.
  • Three seconds. The thrower has three seconds. Count them in the playback.

Open it in the designer and add the movement your shooters actually make.
