From the side line to the circle
Netball · Set piece · 7 of your players and 4 opponents
Wing attack throws in from the right side line in the attacking third. Goal attack leads hard towards the thrower, the goal shooter holds in the circle for the second ball, and the centre stays back as the safe pass.

The set-up
The Sideline throw-in, attacking third has wing attack (3) on the right side line about 6.7 m from the goal line we attack, with the ball. Goal attack (2) is 3.4 m in from the side line and a few metres further from the post, ready to lead at the thrower. The goal shooter (1) holds inside the circle, 3 m from the goal line. The centre (4) waits near the attacking transverse line as the safe pass, with wing defence (5) behind her in the centre third, and goal defence (6) and goal keeper (7) at the other end.
Their wing defence and goal defence stand at least 0.9 m from the thrower, as the rules require. Their goal keeper is between our shooter and the post and their centre covers the space in front of our centre. The gaps between markers are drawn slightly wider than real marking so that each pair stays readable on a phone.
Why it works
A throw-in from the side line is a pass from a player who cannot move with the ball, so the receivers have to create the space. The goal attack's lead at the thrower is the obvious option and is meant to be: it drags her defender towards the side line and opens the middle. The shooter holds rather than leads, because the ball she wants is the second one, from the goal attack once she has turned.
The centre is the release valve. If both front options are covered, the ball goes back to her and the attack resets from the transverse line rather than being forced.
What to drill
- Lead, then hold. Animate the goal attack's lead and the shooter waiting, then the second pass into the circle.
- Change the thrower. Save a copy with the goal attack throwing and the wing attack leading, which is how many teams run it on the left.
- Back to the centre. Practise the reset ball so that nobody forces a pass into a crowded circle.

Attacking backline throw-in
Set piece · 11 players
The ball has gone out over the goal line we attack. Goal attack takes it beside the post, the goal shooter holds on the far side of the ring, wing attack waits on the edge of the circle and the centre comes high as the safe pass. Their goal defence has to stand 0.9 m off the thrower.

Defensive backline throw-in
Set piece · 11 players
A missed shot has gone out over the goal line we defend. The goal keeper throws in, the goal defence breaks for the side line, the wing defence offers on the edge of the circle and the centre holds the transverse line, so the ball can be worked out of the defensive third in two passes.

Centre pass set-up
Formation · 14 players
All fourteen players where the rules put them at the whistle: our centre in the circle with the ball, the opposing centre free in the centre third, and everyone else waiting in a goal third with a defender goal-side of them. The picture every other centre-pass play starts from.

Centre pass overload right
Attack · 11 players
Wing attack and goal attack stand together on the right of the transverse line, with the goal shooter drifted left at the top of the circle. Two defenders crowded into one channel get in each other's way, and if they both stay right the empty left side is there for a re-cut.

Centre pass split lead
Attack · 11 players
Goal attack and wing attack start at opposite ends of the transverse line, so their defenders cannot help each other, and the wing defence sits in the middle of the defensive line as the safe back option. The centre has two first-pass targets as far apart as the court allows.

Centre pass defence: front the leads
Defence · 11 players
Their centre pass. Our wing defence and goal defence stand on the ball side of the players they mark, right on the transverse line, so the straight lead to the circle edge is taken away and the first pass has to go long, wide or backwards. The goal keeper stays goal-side of the shooter.
